Mrs. Janet Lee Pruitt, 75, affectionately known as “Sis” to family and friends, passed away into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior on Thursday, January 18, 2024. A lifelong resident of Tangier Island, VA, Janet was born January 8, 1949 to the late Kenneth Lawson Pruitt and Virginia “Ginny Belle” Pruitt.

Janet was the kind of person everyone knew they could call on in their time of need. Throughout her life she never wavered in her faith, her devotion to family, or her dedication and respect for her community. Having been raised in a Christian home, Janet remained an active member of Swain Memorial United Methodist Church. As a young adult, she began her first job at the crab picking plant, using the skills she learned then to help her husband, Larry, at his crab house for many years. She was grateful to have had the opportunity to work alongside her mom at the waterfront restaurant, having made many precious memories with her during that time. Although Sis wore many hats over the years, her favorite of all her jobs was working as a tour guide for the island ferry boats, the Chesapeake Breeze and the Steven Thomas. She thought the world of the captains and their crews and cherished the friendships made. For Janet, there was no greater love than that she had for her family, especially Larry. Their true love and respect for one another was evident, as you would rarely see one without the other, and even then, all they’d talk about was each other. She loved spending time with her family and looked forward to her nieces’ get togethers, and she was grateful for her friends and treasured each and every one of them. Sis loved life and enjoyed every moment to the fullest, leaving lasting memories full of good times, shared laughs, and full hearts.

She is survived by her husband and best friend, Larry Pruitt; sister, Barbara Gail “Barb” McCready; special nieces, Ginna Giles and Jackie Thomas; great-nephews, Brandon Thomas, Zachary Creedle, Christian Creedle, Kevin Thomas, and Tyler Giles; great-great nephews, Wyatt, Liam, Layton, and Nash Thomas; sister-in-law, Charlotte Parks; special cousin and best friend, Mary Ellen Belote; and several cousins and friends. In addition to her parents, Sis was predeceased by her parents-in-law, Smith and Viola Pruitt and brother-in-law, Jackie Burton “Burt” McCready.

A service to celebrate Janet’s life will be held at the Swain Memorial United Methodist Church on Thursday, January 25, 2024 at 2:00 p.m., with The Reverend Charles W. Parks III and Elder Duane Crockett officiating. Family and friends will gather for a time of sharing one hour prior to the service.
