An attempted routine traffic stop in Cheriton Friday afternoon turned into a high speed chase that eventually led to the shut down of the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel.
Just before 3:00 PM a Cheriton Town Police Officer initiated a traffic stop. The suspect, reportedly driving an SUV, then proceeded to drive at a high rate of speed continuing south bound toward the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. The chase continued across the Bridge Tunnel, causing delays as Bridge Tunnel Police attempted to stop the suspect with the use of spike strips. The suspect was able to get off the Bridge to Virginia Beach and the chase eventually led Virginia State Police to shut down the west bound lanes of the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel. The barricade led to the stopping of the vehicle and suspects were apprehended at the scene. The detour of the HRBT was lifted at approximately 4:15 PM. The backup resulting from the barricade was about 6 miles long according to VDOT.
