Friday night pursuit started in Exmore ends in Virginia Beach with driver of stolen car crashing and succumbing to injuries

On Friday, February 23, 2024, at approximately 8:26 PM, state police attempted to stop a 2024 black Chevrolet pickup truck for driving recklessly by speed, 92MPH in a 55MPH zone, southbound Route 13 in Exmore. The vehicle refused to stop and a pursuit was initiated. Northampton County Sherriff’s Department assisted. During the pursuit it was discovered that the vehicle was stolen out of the state of New York. 

Upon further investigation and review of evidence, it has been determined that the Northampton Sheriff Deputies terminated their participation of the pursuit prior to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel Police Department closely monitored the stolen vehicle across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge to the city of Virginia beach, where Virginia State Police assumed lead. Once in the city, local troopers observed the suspect vehicle fleeing from law enforcement, and initiated pursuit of the vehicle.

The stolen vehicle headed and turned onto Shore Drive from Northampton Boulevard. As the pursuit continued down Shore Drive, the driver of the Chevrolet lost control of the vehicle and ran off the roadway into the tree line at the intersection of Shore Drive and Atlantic Avenue. 

As troopers approached the vehicle to render aid, the driver and only occupant, was suffering serious life threatening injuries and speaking to troopers. The unidentified male driver, died shortly after from the injuries sustained. The Medical Examiners Office was contacted to assist in making positive identification.  

This is still an on-going investigation. As of yet, positive identification has not been made by the Medical Examiners Office. Once positive identification has been made, and proper notification has been made, an updated press release will follow. Until that time, there is no further information that is releasable at this time.
