Eastern Shore experiences increase in COVID test positives

Accomack and Northampton counties are seeing a surge in COVID-19 test positives as the Delta variant has apparently arrived here.  In Wednesday’s report from the Virginia Department of Health, Accomack reported 11 new test positives with Northampton reporting 5.  Accomack reported one hospitalization and neither county reported any deaths.

Over the last 7 days Accomack has reported a total of 43 test positives, 8 hospitalizations and no deaths. Northampton has reported 13 test positives, 1 hospitalization and no deaths.

One statistic from the CDC bears noting.  Nationally, 164 million individuals have received the vaccine.  Of those who received the vaccine, 125,000 have reported testing positive for the virus, a very small percentage of the vaccinated population. Statistically, the 125,000 represents  7 one hundredths of one percent of the entire total of vaccinated individuals.

Virginia reported 1,716 test positives with 76 hospitalizations and five deaths on Wednesday. As in the past, the overwhelming majority of those who are hospitalized or have died as the result of this new wave of cases are those with underlying medical conditions.
