Holly Grove traveled to Annapolis on Saturday to participate in the Maryland State Christian School Tournament.
Holly Grove was the #2 seed in the tournament and defeated the #7 seed New Life Christian last Wednesday in Westover to earn the trip to Annapolis.
On Saturday, Holly Grove played the 2016 state champ New Life Christian in the semi finals. (New Life defeated Holly Grove in the 2016 state championship match.) Holly Grove won this very exciting match in 5 sets. The teams traded wins in the first 4 sets. In the fifth set, Olivia Burkhead served strong, including 3 aces and Gwyn Loniewski had 4 kills to take a quick 13-3 lead. As the fifth game was to 15, this lead was enough to get Holly Grove to the finals.
In the finals against #1 seed Heritage, Holly Grove won the first set, but dropped the next three. Holly Grove was led by seniors Olivia Burkhead and Makenzie Lambertson who were selected to the All-State Tournament Team.
Holly Grove finished the season (including state and conference tournaments) at 19-4 with all four losses coming from Delmarva Christian (#2 in the state of Delaware) and Heritage (2017 Maryland Christian School State Champ).
