Usually we reserve local news on WESR for news that affects the residents of Accomack and Northampton Counties.  This morning we’re going to deviate slightly from that policy to share news from our neighbor across the bay, Virginia Beach.    Friday at 4:15 p.m.  gunfire erupted at the Virginia Beach  Public Works government complex on Princess Anne Road.  As we understand it at this time,  12 people in the building at the time of the shooting were killed along with the gunman making a total of 13 dead.  Four others were taken to the hospital.  One police officer was shot but survived because he was wearing a bullet proof vest. According to Chief of Police Jim Cervera, the shooter was an active employee of the Public Works Department who worked in the building where the shooting took place.

Governor Northam arrived at approximately 7:30 last night to support the families affected and the  officers and first responders whose quick response prevented the carnage from being even worse.  Northam offered the resources of the Commonwealth to assist the families and the Virginia Beach authorities. Northam called Friday  ” a horrific day”.

Other politicians including Congresswoman Luria and several members of the General Assembly also expressed condolences to the families of the victims and the residents of Virginia Beach. Luria headed to Virginia Beach to assist.

The incident is the worst shooting event in Virginia since the Virginia Tech Shootings in April of 2007 in which 32 died and 17 were injured.

According to  Chief  Cervera,  the Virginia Beach Forensics Unit, the Virginia State Police Forensics Unit and the FBI are in the early stages of investigating the tragedy and details will be shared when it becomes possible.

At the time of this writing the motive of the shooter is not known.

Virginia Beach Mayor Bobby Dyer called it “the most devastating day in the history of Virginia Beach. The people involved are our friends, co-workers, neighbors and colleagues.”

Governor Northam had these comments at a news conference last night.
