The Town of Chincoteague’s Emergency Management Team continues to monitor the very dangerous Hurricane Florence. The Town has declared a state of emergency beginning at noon, September 10, 2018.

While the National Hurricane Center does not currently expect to have a direct landfall of the very dangerous and catastrophic eye-wall in or very near Chincoteague, the area will still receive impacts from this very large and powerful storm starting late Wednesday or early Thursday.

Now is the time to prepare for gusty winds, heavy rain, and tidal flooding. Secure all outdoor items that can be blown around, including construction materials. Fill any needed medications. Plan for your pets, as shelters do not accept pets. Have a gallon of water per person a day and enough non-perishable food to last for five days in the event evacuation is not necessary and commodities become scarce. Fuel any vehicles that will be used to evacuate the area if evacuation becomes necessary. Obtain cash, as credit cards won’t work if there are power outages.
