The proposed expansion of the Town of Onancock’s boundaries appears to be off the table — at least for now.
At its August 20th meeting, the Accomack County Board of Supervisors agreed to send a boundary line adjustment request from the Town of Onancock to public hearing. The proposal sought to add more than 84 acres of mostly undeveloped land along Liberty and Hill Streets to the town’s limits.
A public hearing on the request was held on September 17th, where the Board discussed the issue but chose to continue the conversation at its October meeting.
The Onancock Town Council also held its own public hearing on September 22nd, taking no action and deciding to revisit the matter later.
Four days after that, officials from both the county and the town, along with their legal counsel, met to further discuss the proposed boundary change.
Then, on October 9th, the County Administrator received an email from the Town Manager, officially withdrawing Onancock’s request for the boundary line adjustment.
Officials note that if Onancock decides to revisit the expansion in the future, the process will have to start over, including all required notices, public hearings, and communications with affected property owners.
