The Sunday nor’easter swamped the Eastern Shore.
From the seaside to the bayside, reports were the same — flooding tidal waters created havoc and left behind piles of debris on low lying roads once the tide receded.
VDOT’s snowplow trucks were repurposed to push water aside along the Chincoteague Causeway so vehicles could pass. The island was flooded for several hours around high tide, though the Causeway remained open.
Water flooded the seaside towns, like Wachapreague and Oyster, leaving debris scattered across the roadways.
Only about 1 inch of rainfall was recorded.
More coastal flooding is in the forecast. A Coastal Flood Warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. Monday, and a High Surf Advisory continues through 6 p.m. Monday. Officials warn that widespread flooding may damage homes and businesses near the water and make some roads impassable, especially around high tide. Beach erosion and dune damage are also expected. Large waves — seven to nine feet high — are also expected, creating dangerous surf and strong rip currents.
Residents in flood-prone areas are urged to take precautions, protect property, and avoid driving through flooded roads. Never drive through water of unknown depth.
Breezy north northeast winds are expected to continue for the entire week.
