A historic site on the Eastern Shore is getting a boost from a statewide preservation fund.

The Historic Samuel Outlaw Blacksmith Shop Museum in Onancock has been awarded nearly sixty-five thousand dollars from the Virginia Black, Indigenous, and People of Color Historic Preservation Fund.

The Department of Historic Resources and the Virginia Board of Historic Resources say the money is part of more than two and a half million dollars in grants being awarded to seven projects across the Commonwealth.

The program, created by the General Assembly in 2022, supports the protection and rehabilitation of historic and archaeological sites connected to Virginia’s Black, Indigenous, and other underrepresented communities.

Officials say the goal is to preserve the stories and places that reflect the state’s full and diverse history.
