The Eastern Shore experienced heavy rains and wind Sunday. In addition, high tides flooded roads in low lying areas. The rains, which were not associated with Hurricane Florence, caused a great deal of flooding especially in Northampton County which led to the closing of Northampton County Public Schools and Broadwater Academy today. Accomack and Northampton Head Start also closed today. Eastville reported over six inches of rain as of last night, five inches were reported in the East Point area of Accomack County.
WESR has received reports that Route 13 is closed in Exmore, but according to VDOT, it isn’t officially closed. On US-13 South (Lankford Hwy) in the vicinity of Merry Cat Ln; Rt. 601E/W (Accomack County), motorists can expect potential delays due to standing water. Large amounts of standing water have also been reported on Route 13 near Exmore Plaza. Cemetery Road near Belle Haven is closed due to a washout.
The entrance to the Hillsboro development on Shields Bridge Road in Belle Haven has washed out and no one can enter or exit the Hillsboro development. VDOT, Accomack County and A&N Electric are working to try to find a way for residents to be able to get in and out of Hillsboro.
As of right now, rt. 606 North at Happy Union in Northampton County, 183 Cemetery Road and 12 at Merry Cat Lane in Belle Haven and rt. 789 Drummondtown Road near Locustville are reported to be flooded at this time.
High tides caused road flooding in low lying areas Sunday on both the bay and sea sides. All of these conditions are expected to improve today.
