A large crowd filled the parking lot of the site of the new Eastern Shore Public Library and Heritage Center under clear skies and perfect temperatures to celebrate the start of the construction of the $5 million facility. Speakers included Richard Lewis, chairman of the Library Steering Committee, Gerry Ryan, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Supervisor Harrison Phillips, Northampton County Board Chairman Spencer Murray, Delegate Rob Bloxom, Senator Lynwood Lewis, Caroline Bott representing Representative Elaine Luria, Blythe Ann Scott of the Library of Virginia and Governor Ralph Northam.
Chairman Ryan thanked the members of all of the various groups that overcame adversity and pulled together to make the day possible. Governor Northam had this to say:
Northam also commented on the benefits the new library would bring to the Eastern Shore.
Northam also gave his view of the challenges we face on the Eastern Shore and hinted that down the road we may see more of him.
A camera has been set up to allow interested individuals to log on and view the daily progress at the new library.
