The Chincoteague Police Department announced this week that new cameras are being installed at several key intersections and high-traffic areas around the island.
Officials emphasized that the cameras are not speed enforcement devices. They will not issue tickets, track vehicle speeds, or monitor minor traffic violations.
Instead, the project is intended to enhance public safety by adding an extra layer of security in areas heavily used by residents and visitors. Police say the cameras will also assist investigations by allowing officers to review footage when incidents occur, helping them respond more quickly and effectively. The system will additionally support future planning by providing a foundation for expanding coverage as community needs grow.
The initiative is funded through a Byrne/JAG grant awarded to the Chincoteague Police Department, covering the purchase and installation costs.
Matthew Nicholson said transparency is key to building trust with the community and noted that the cameras are solely a tool to improve public safety, not for surveillance beyond that purpose.
Residents with questions about the program are encouraged to contact the Chincoteague Police Department directly.
