A&N Electric Cooperative (ANEC) continues its restoration efforts and is reporting that as of noon, about 1,600 members are without power as the coastal wind storm intensifies in our area.
“We’re monitoring the forecast for this storm and are seeing that the highest winds are beginning to develop in our area, which is translating into some higher outage numbers,” said Brian Charnock, ANEC’s Director of Operations and Construction Services. “We have all available crews, including contract crews working diligently to restore power to cooperative members.”
Restoration efforts began earlier this morning when the storm system began entering the area. The largest concentration of outages are currently affecting members in the Exmore and Belle Haven area, with other scattered outages in both Accomack and Northampton Counties.
The number of outages is expected to fluctuate through the duration of the storm as crews work to restore power and high winds continue to affect portions of the cooperative’s distribution system.
“This is a statewide wind event with other electric cooperatives and utilities seeing significant outages as a result of the high winds,” Charnock said. “We thank all our members for their patience while we work to restore power and ask that they please report anything they see or hear regarding the electric distribution system.”
Many of the outages being reported are the result of limbs and trees on the distribution lines. Line crews are working alongside tree-trimming crews to address outages as quickly and safely as possible.
Please stay away from all downed power lines. Consider all lines energized, as well as tree or limbs in contact with lines. Report downed power lines to ANEC (757-787-9750) or call 911. The Cooperative has contracted with professional tree trimmers to take care of those situations. Please do not try to free any wires tangled in tree limbs yourself.
Short power interruptions, referred to as “blinks,” can be common during storms such as this. A small number of blinks can be the distribution system attempting to fix an issue to avoid a total power outage. However, frequent or a prolonged series of blinks could indicate an issue that the Cooperative needs to address. Families who have special medical needs or elderly members should closely monitor any outage situation and make alternate arrangements, if needed.
