The Virginia Department of Forestry (DOF) has launched its annual fall collection campaign and is asking residents to donate acorns, black walnuts, and chestnuts to help grow the Commonwealth’s future forests.
State Forester Rob Farrell said the effort supports DOF nurseries in producing trees with strong genetics that thrive when planted in Virginia’s forests and communities. “Your donations help ensure our future forests are here for generations to come,” Farrell said.
Collecting is simple. Place acorns or nuts in a paper bag or cardboard box—plastic bags are not accepted—label them with the date, species, and location, and drop them off at the nearest DOF office. If the species is unknown, including a leaf from the tree will assist staff in identification. Nuts should be kept separated by species.
Donations will be accepted through Tuesday, October 15, at the Virginia Department of Forestry’s office on Edgar Thomas Rd in Accomac. Collection areas will be set up outside each location. For details and to find the nearest office, visit www.dof.virginia.gov and use the “Find a Forester” tool.
