Health officials have confirmed that an otter captured on Saxis Road in Temperanceville tested positive for rabies late Friday, September 19. Two people who were exposed to the animal are now receiving post-exposure rabies vaccinations, according to Jon Richardson, District Director of the Eastern Shore Health District.
Authorities are reminding the public not to handle wild, stray, or unknown animals unless properly trained. Rabies is endemic on the Eastern Shore and is spread through the saliva of infected animals. Anyone bitten by a wild or stray animal should contact their primary care provider immediately and report the incident to the Health Department.
Officials also stress the importance of vaccinating pets against rabies, since animals can be exposed without owners realizing it. Once rabies symptoms appear, the disease is fatal, making timely prevention critical.
