Traffic was halted on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel for more than an hour Tuesday evening after a serious two-vehicle accident occurred on the northbound span between the two tunnels.

According to Tom Anderson, Deputy Executive Director of Finance and Operations for the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, the crash happened around 4:45 p.m. when an SUV attempting a lane transition forced another car against the curb. Both vehicles lost control, with the SUV flipping onto its cab. Emergency responders reported one person sustained serious injuries.

The northbound lanes were shut down until about 6 p.m. while crews worked to clear the scene. Anderson said there was curb and rail damage in the passing lane, along with additional curb damage in the travel lane. An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
