Due to the winter storm that brought overnight snow to the Hampton Roads region, Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews are continuing to treat and plow interstates and other state-maintained roadways. Once the snow concludes, motorists should stay off the roads until conditions improve, as snow and sustained freezing temperatures may still result in hazardous conditions and to keep paths clear for crews to perform their work.

While sunny skies are expected on Wednesday, temperatures will remain below freezing and are expected to stay that way through Thursday afternoon. Snow removal operations will take time, and fewer cars on the road will allow crews to work in a safer and more effective manner while keeping motorists safe. Any remaining moisture on the roadways during these sustained freezing temperatures could refreeze and cause icy conditions, with any wet spots on the roadway to be considered ice.

Crews are working around the clock in 12-hour shifts to make state-maintained roads passable. A road in “passable condition” is defined as:

  • An 8- to 10- foot wide path that provides access for emergency vehicles
  • Drivable with extreme caution, may be snow-packed, and not bare pavement or plowed curb-to-curb
  • Crews may sand hills, curves, and intersections to help with traction

Crews will continue to address the interstate and state-maintained roadways as needed over the next few days, including spreading salt and abrasives, as needed, on icy patches or slick spots to melt ice and snow and improve traction.

VDOT maintains all interstates, major state-maintained primary routes, and county roads within Hampton Roads. Individual municipalities maintain their own roadways, including their own primary and secondary roads.

Reminders:

  • Avoid or delay all nonessential travel.
  • Give crews room to work. Do not pass or cut off trucks or roadway equipment.
  • Remove snow and ice from vehicles before traveling.
  • Call 911 if you have an emergency.
