The Onancock Town Council voted 5 to 1 Monday night to approve the relocation of the Onancock Market to the parking lot on Queen Street. The issue has been widely discussed over the last several months. Mayor Fletcher Fosque said that during a public hearing Monday night over 20 individuals spoke in favor of the move and only one spoke against it.
Fosque said the Market will remain at its current location on Market St. for the summer season. He said the winter market will be moved to a new building which will be placed in the Queen Street parking lot as well. He said it is not certain if the winter market will move this year.
Fosque and his wife Janet own the current location of the Farmers Market and the building, formerly the House of Deals which currently houses the winter market. He said he has been approached by someone wishing to house a business in the building and would need the lot next door for parking purposes. However, Fosque said that no commitments have been made at this time so it is uncertain if those plans will pan out.
Currently, the Fosques allow the Market property and the building at no charge.
