The National Weather Service in Wakefield is warning of several days of unsettled and hazardous weather for the Eastern Shore of Virginia as onshore winds, high surf, and tidal flooding impact the region through late week.

According to the Tuesday afternoon impact weather briefing, breezy to windy conditions are expected to persist through Thursday as Hurricane Imelda curves out to sea and Hurricane Humberto remains offshore. The storms will generate prolonged northeast winds, large swells, and dangerous surf along area beaches.

Beginning Wednesday, minor tidal flooding is expected across much of the Shore, with water levels reaching about one foot above ground in vulnerable locations during high tide. The risk of flooding will continue into Friday, with locally moderate flooding possible in low-lying communities along the Chesapeake Bay. Coastal Flood Advisories are in effect.

A High Surf Advisory has also been issued for all area beaches, with nearshore breaking waves of 7 to 12 feet forecast Wednesday. Beach erosion is possible, and rip currents will remain a high risk through midweek. Officials urge the public to stay out of the water.

Marine conditions will be dangerous for boaters. A Gale Warning is in effect for Atlantic coastal waters, the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, and Currituck Sound beginning Tuesday evening through Wednesday. Northeast winds of 25 to 30 knots, with gusts up to 40 knots, are expected. Seas could build to 10 to 13 feet offshore, with occasional waves as high as 15 to 19 feet.

Locally, residents should expect gusty winds of 25 to 40 miles per hour through Wednesday afternoon. Conditions are expected to improve gradually by Friday, with dry and cooler weather heading into the weekend.
