The Eastern Shore’s pumpkin grower extraordinaire, Garrison “Doc” Brown of Eastville, took fourth place in the Pumpkin Growing Contest at the Virginia State Fair this past weekend in Doswell, Virginia.
Brown’s giant gourd weighed in at an astonishing 859.8 pounds. The overall winner’s pumpkin tipped the scales at 1,983 pounds, but was grown in New York. The third place pumpkin also hailed from New York State, which made Brown’s pumpkin the second-largest grown in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Last year, Brown raised a 760-pound pumpkin that was displayed at the 2024 Eastern Shore Agricultural and Aquacultural Fair. This year’s fair, set for Saturday at the old Machipongo Middle School, will again showcase several giant pumpkins. The Virginia State Fair keeps the winners for display purposes, but Brown will be bringing another giant this Saturday, as will others.
