The Accomack County Board of Supervisors voted Wednesday to schedule a public hearing on a request by the Town of Onancock for an 84 acre boundary adjustment.

The Town of Onancock is looking to expand its boundaries. Officials have requested what’s called a “boundary line adjustment” to bring more than 84 acres of mostly undeveloped land along Liberty and Hill Streets into the town limits.

Unlike annexation, the adjustment requires approval by both the Town and Accomack County, public hearings, and ultimately the Circuit Court.

If approved, the move would allow Onancock to extend water and sewer services into the area, paving the way for higher-density housing. The land is already zoned residential and marked for future village development.

County officials say they won’t lose any significant revenue, but property owners in the area would begin paying town taxes and service fees.

The only initial concern was about sewer capacity. Because the Onancock plant has limited treatment ability, the County asked that any new development be counted toward the Town’s allocation — not the County’s. Town leaders agreed, and that condition is written into the proposed agreement.

The public hearing is scheduled to occur on September 17 at the regular monthly Board meeting.
