This is your coastal weather update from the National Weather Service in Wakefield, Virginia, issued early Sunday, October 12th.
Dangerous weather conditions are unfolding along the Maryland and Virginia Eastern Shore, \
Three major alerts are in effect this morning — a High Wind Warning, a High Surf Advisory, and a Coastal Flood Warning.

Let’s start with the wind. Gusts of up to 50 miles per hour are expected across the region through early Monday. These strong winds could down trees, damage power lines, and make driving hazardous,

Along the coast, the High Surf Advisory means beach conditions will be dangerous. Waves of 10 to 15 feet are forecast in the surf zone — powerful enough to cause beach erosion, damage dune structures, and create deadly rip currents.
Officials are strongly advising inexperienced swimmers and boaters to stay out of the water until conditions improve.

The biggest threat, though, may come from flooding. A Coastal Flood Warning is now in effect for Ocean City, Maryland, and Virginia’s Accomack and Northampton Counties.
Forecasters expect 2 to 3 feet of water above ground level in low-lying coastal areas — that’s enough to flood roads, isolate some neighborhoods, and threaten homes and businesses near shorelines and tidal waterways.

Flooding will likely be worst during high tide this afternoon, and again late tonight into early Monday morning, with water levels staying elevated through Monday afternoon.
Emergency managers are urging residents to protect flood-prone property and to never drive through standing water — it may be deeper than it looks. If local authorities issue evacuation orders, follow them immediately.

As always, keep tuned WESR and monitor www.shoredailynews.com for updated information.

Once again — strong winds, dangerous surf, and significant coastal flooding are expected to continue through Monday. Stay alert, stay safe, and avoid unnecessary travel near the coast.
