Before the Storm (Preparation Phase)
1. Create an Emergency Plan
- Know evacuation routes and shelter locations.
- Establish a communication plan with family members.
- Include plans for pets.
2. Build a Disaster Supply Kit
- Water (1 gallon per person per day for at least 3 days)
- Non-perishable food
- Flashlights, batteries
- First aid kit
- Medications
- Battery-powered or hand-crank radio (NOAA Weather Radio is ideal)
- Chargers and power banks
- Personal hygiene items
3. Secure Your Home
- Roof: Check for loose shingles; reinforce or repair as needed.
- Windows: Install storm shutters or board up with plywood.
- Doors & Garage: Reinforce doors and garage door with braces or impact-resistant kits.
- Gutters & Drains: Clear debris to prevent water buildup.
- Yard: Trim trees and remove loose items like furniture or decorations.
4. Backup Power
- Consider a generator for essential appliances.
- Know how to use it safely—never operate indoors or near windows.
5. Insurance & Documents
- Review your homeowner’s insurance policy (flood insurance is separate).
- Take photos/videos of your home and valuables for potential claims.
- Store important documents (ID, insurance, deeds) in a waterproof container or digitally.
When a Hurricane is Imminent
1. Monitor Official Alerts
- Follow updates from NOAA, National Hurricane Center, and local emergency management.
2. Fuel Up
- Fill your gas tank early—stations may run out.
- Refill propane tanks if needed.
3. Protect Appliances
- Unplug electronics.
- Raise appliances off the ground in flood-prone areas.
- Turn off propane tanks.
4. Stay or Go?
- Evacuate if local officials advise or if you live in a storm surge zone.
- If staying, identify your safest room (interior, windowless, ground floor).
