Mrs. Winnie Taylor Green, of Onley, VA, formerly of Temperanceville, VA, passed away Saturday, April 18, 2026, at Commonwealth Senior Living in Onancock, VA, where she had resided for nearly eight years. Born March 14, 1933, in Temperanceville, Winnie was the only child of Otho “Toby” Lee Taylor and Stella Lang Taylor.
A gifted student, she graduated as valedictorian of her class from Atlantic High School – an early reflection of the intelligence, determination, and quiet excellence that would mark her life. Shortly after graduation, she married the love of her life, Mitchel Green, beginning a devoted partnership that would span nearly 70 years and serve as the foundation for a close and loving family.
After dedicating her early years to raising her children, she embarked on a long and faithful career as a clerk for the United States Postal Service, retiring in 1991 after 30 years of service. Never one to stay idle, she also lent her talents to Bailey’s Florist Shop in Onley, where she coordinated floral arrangement sales, and for several years in the 1960s and ’70s, she served as the Temperanceville social news correspondent for the Eastern Shore News, keeping her community connected through her writing.
She was actively involved in the Woman’s Club of Accomack County during those years, where her creativity and sense of fun helped bring to life many memorable events, including a particularly entertaining and well-loved woman-less pageant. Musically inclined, she taught herself to play the piano by ear and could “honky-tonk” with the best of them, bringing joy and laughter to any gathering. Winnie was also an avid fan of the Virginia Tech Hokies (where many of her family members hailed) and the Baltimore Orioles, faithfully following their seasons and celebrating their victories with enthusiasm.
A woman of strong faith, she was a longtime and devoted member of Temperanceville United Methodist Church and later Assawoman United Methodist Church. In her retirement years, she treasured time spent reconnecting with her high school classmates, enjoying annual winter trips to Florida with her husband, and hosting cherished family gatherings, whether at home or during weekends in Rehoboth Beach, DE.
In addition to her parents, Winnie was joyously reunited with her husband, Mitchel Green, and her beloved son, Gary Green. She leaves to cherish her memory her sons, Michael Green and his wife, Darlene, of Fredericksburg, VA, and Drew Green and his wife, Susan, of Stockton, MD; grandchildren, Christopher Green (Angela), Beth Dang (Donny), David Green (Stacey), Roger Hall (Summer), Jennifer Wolfe (Shawn), Brandon Green (Brandy), Taylor Green (Valerie), and Kevin Green (Krystle); daughter-in-law, Judy Green, of Salisbury, MD, and numerous great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted from the graveside at the John W. Taylor Memorial Cemetery, in Temperanceville, on Saturday, April 25, 2026 at 3:00 p.m.
