Robby Scott Custis, 77, husband of Joy Milliner Custis and a resident of Onancock, VA, passed away Sunday, November 17, 2024 at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, VA. Born February 8, 1947 in Nassawadox, VA and raised in Daughterty, VA, he was a son of the late Carl Bull Custis and Amis Scott Custis.
Robby graduated from Onancock High School, class of 1965, and then attended the University of Virginia. Shortly after he completed the apprentice program at Newport News Shipyard he accepted a job with Ebasco Services, a company that provided engineering consulting and constructed nuclear power plants and moved his young family to Port St. Lucie, Florida to work on the nuclear plants being built on Hutchinson Island for Florida Power and Light. It didn’t take long for Robby to achieve the position of Supervisor of Document Control, a position he loved and where he brought improvements over time. This led to a job with Florida Power and Light at their Juno Beach office with stints at the Turkey Point nuclear facility in Miami.
Upon retirement fishing, a lifetime passion, just wasn’t enough so Robby took job shopping jobs at nuclear facilities in Michigan, Ohio, and Arizona. In the fall of 2023, Robby was persuaded to move one last time, returning to his roots on the Eastern Shore where he and Joy have been grateful for time spent with family and old friends.
In addition to his wife of 54 years, he is survived by his daughter, Alice Custis and her daughter, Avary Custis, both of Hampton, VA; son, Ben Custis and his wife, Jen, of St. Pete Beach, FL; brother, Dennis Custis and his wife, Dianne, of Onancock, and their children, Jennings and Katie Custis.
To honor his wishes, Robby’s family will gather privately to celebrate his life.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to your local SPCA or Foodbank.
Arrangements by the Williams-Onancock Funeral Home.
