Nancy Ann Wood, 81, of Mappsville, VA, former longtime resident of New Church, VA, was welcomed into the arms of her Lord and Savior on Thursday, September 4, 2025. Born December 23, 1943 in Fordwick, VA and raised in Pocomoke City, MD, she was the daughter of the late Sally Marie Campbell Chatham and Clarence Chatham.
Nancy married the love of her life, Douglas “Art” Wood, after graduating from Pocomoke High School in June of 1963 and soon became a mother of two. A devout Christian woman, she was a devoted wife and mother whose faith never wavered. In November of 1965, Nancy was baptized by Pastor Robert Huggins at New Church Baptist Church where she and Art would later have their children baptized, followed by their grandchildren.
Family always came first for Nancy and there was nothing she wouldn’t do for her loved ones – no matter the time or task. Her sewing skills were once put to the test when her daughter needed to make a shirt for home economics class, and of course, it turned out perfectly. Nancy’s sweet tea was a family favorite, and she’d drop everything to make a fresh pitcher when asked. Once her oldest child graduated, she decided to enter the workforce at Eastern Shore Seafood, in Mappsville, where she remained until retirement.
Nancy was predeceased by her husband of 41 years, Art Wood. She leaves to cherish her memory, her children, Ann Lewis and her companion, Richard “Stewart” Shield, of Mappsville and Mark Wood and his fiancée, Donna Parks of Westover, MD; brother, Harry Chatham of Mappsville; grandchildren, Mariah Shield, Maranda Ayres and her husband, Kenneth, Sr., and Justin Wood; great-grandchildren, Reagan Thornes, Ella Thomas, and Grayson Ayres; and several nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to gather for a visitation at the graveside at First Baptist Church Cemetery in Pocomoke City on Monday afternoon at 2, followed by a funeral service at 2:30, with The Reverend Greg Fentress officiating.
Contributions in Nancy’s memory may be made to Living Waters Inspirational Church of God, 2226 Bypass Road, Pocomoke City, MD 21851.
Memory tributes may be shared with the family at www.williamsfuneralhomes.com.
