Eugene Harrison Matthews

Eugene Harrison Matthews, Sr., 85, was born on February 2, 1940 in Pocomoke City, Maryland to the late Ulysses and Helen V. Matthews. He peacefully transitioned to his heavenly home on February 18, 2025 at his residence.

Eugene was educated in public schools of Somerset County. He was a farmer and was employed for many years by Amos J. King, who was not only his employer, but also a devoted friend.

In 1994, Eugene met Linda Sample. They were united in marriage on July 22, 1995 and celebrated twenty-nine and a half years of marriage.

Eugene was a faithful member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church for many years. There he served as a Trustee and sang on the choir. He also performed many duties around the church, to include opening up the church on Sunday morning prior to service. He fulfilled these duties until his health began to fail.

Eugene was a “gentle giant” who led a quiet, simple life. He enjoyed spending time at his home smoking his pipe and watching marathons of Andy Griffin, Sanford & Son, and The Young and the Restless. Another favorite pastime was long drives with his wife.

Eugene loved spending time with his brothers. They would be sitting at the end of the lane every morning for what we called “his morning meeting” or slowly riding around his farm, “Route 66” as we began to call it. He was also called the neighborhood watch, because he saw all activities that occurred.

In addition to his parents, Eugene was preceded in death by his brother, Hampton Matthews and two sisters, Anna Fletcher and Doris Dacres.

Eugene leaves to cherish his memories: his devoted wife, Linda, whom never left his side and made sure all of his needs were met; sons, Eugene (Janice) Matthews, Jr., Lawrence Matthews, Tyrone Matthews, all of Pocomoke, MD, and Alvin (Michele) Sample of Petersburg, VA; daughters, Deborah Matthews, Tonya Sample-Wharton, both of Pocomoke, MD, and Lowanda (Homer) Rusk of Newport News, VA; brothers, Norman Matthews, Sr. and James (Sylvia) Matthews, both of Pocomoke, MD; eighteen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Doris Hack of Richmond, VA, Pamela Warner, Mabel Matthews, both of Pocomoke, MD, Serene Washington, and Shirleen (Charles) Addison, both of Melfa, VA; brother-in-law, Sylvester (Katina) Savage of Fredericksburg, VA; faithful friend, Eugene “Sonny” Smith of Westover, MD; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

To know “Gene,” as he was affectionately called, was to love him.

Funeral services will be conducted  Saturday at 11Am from Mt. Zion U. M. Church, Pocomoke, with Rev. Gary Miller officiating. Interment  will be  in the Christ AME Cemetery, Pocomoke,  MD. Family and friends may call on Friday from 4-5 at the funeral home.

Arrangements by the Cooper & Humbles Funeral Co., Accomac.
