Madelle Fletcher Shrieves Hastings was born at Hunting Creek on November 27, 1935, the daughter of Mary Matthews Shrieves and Tully Fletcher Shrieves. She was the widow of William Thomas Hastings, Jr. (Billy T). Madelle graduated from Northampton Accomack Memorial Hospital School of Professional Nursing as a registered nurse in 1957 and continued her nursing training at Memphis Baptist Hospital in Operating Room Techniques. She worked for more than thirty years as the operating room supervisor at Northampton Accomack Memorial Hospital.

She was an active member of Johnson’s United Methodist Church where she served as Lay Leader, Chairman of the Board and President of the United Methodist Women. After her retirement, Madelle was a regular volunteer at Broadwater Academy and Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital. She was an avid reader and flower grower, having provided flowers for her church’s worship services for many summers. She was also nominated and recognized by Who’s Who for Business and Professional Women.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Jo Turner (Tyson) of Sennett, NY and her son, William Thomas Hastings, III (Donna) of Johnsontown. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Mary Tyson Turner Danylec (Matt) of Wilmington, NC, Joseph Turner (Maria) of Mechanicsville, Emily Turner of Sennett, NY, Patrick Turner (Sarah Meg) of Owasco, NY, William Thomas Hastings, IV (Daryl)of Johnsontown and Christopher Hastings of Alabama and her beloved great grandchildren, Maxwell, Mercer, Liam, Evie, Segan, Brinley, Collins, Magnolia and Thomas. Her sister-in-law, Harriett Shrieves and 5 nieces and nephews also survive her. In addition to Billy T, she was predeceased by her twin brother, George, brother John William (Billy) and sister-in-law Joyce Doty Shrieves.

Madelle died on June 19 at Commonwealth Senior Living, her home for the past sixteen months. Madelle’s family deeply appreciates the excellent care and personal attention provided for her there by the nursing staff, nursing assistants, aides, therapists and other staff. She loved you.

Services will be Saturday July 5, 2025, at 11:00AM, at Johnson’s United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Johnson’s United Methodist Church, 11175 Bayside Rd, Machipongo, VA 23405 or Northampton Free Library, a branch of Eastern Shore Public Library, 7745 Seaside Rd, Nassawadox, VA 23413.
