Janet Custis Hickman

Janet Custis Hickman, 75, passed away peacefully at her home in Onancock, VA on Monday, May 19, 2025. A lifelong resident of Onancock, she was born March 17, 1950 to the late Grayson Powell Custis and Ida Milliner Custis.

Raised in a Christian home, Janet attended Onancock Baptist Church with her family and later joined Market Street United Methodist. She graduated from Onancock High School, class of 1968, and continued her education at Goldey-Beacom School of Business. Janet worked for Accomack County Public Schools for more than three decades, retiring in 2018. Above all else, Janet loved her family. She was a caring and devoted mother and cherished time spent with her grandsons.

Janet is survived by her daughter, Melanie Pruitt and her husband, Steven, of Harrisonburg, VA; grandsons, Grayson and Aden; sister, Shirley Hutchinson of Onancock; niece, Polly Stern; and great-nephews, Parker and Walker. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother-in-law, Benjamin Hutchinson.

Funeral services will be conducted from the graveside at the Fairview Lawn Cemetery on Saturday, May 24, 2025 at 11:00 a.m., with The Reverend Ray Daisey officiating.
