Dr. William McIntyre

Dr. William McIntyre, known as “Dr. Mac” died peacefully in his sleep with his wife at his bedside on December 24, 2024 in Fort Collins, Colorado.

He was born at the Army base Fort Dix, New Jersey on June 24, 1946. His family moved several times, including living in the Philippines during his first-grade year, an experience of which he spoke fondly. They eventually landed in McClean, Virginia where he graduated from McClean High School in 1964. He attended the University of Miami in Ohio, graduating in 1968 with a Bachelor’s of Arts in Biology. This led him to the University of Chicago Medical School where he obtained his medical degree. His first two years of residence were in the Emory-Grady system in Atlanta followed by his third year of residency and a gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Minnesota.

In 1976, he moved his young family to the Eastern Shore of Virginia to practice in an underserved area for the next 14 years. His next and last position was at the Cheyenne VA Medical Center in Cheyenne, Wyoming where he practiced as a general internist, hospitalist, intensivist, gastroenterologist, hepatologist, and oncologist until 2016. He served as Chief of Medicine twice. He was instrumental in establishing the Endoscopy suite, the Live and GI clinics, and the Hematology-Oncology infusion clinic.

He is survived by his wife Laura Martin, children Michael McIntyre, Alec (Kari) McIntyre, Allison (Matt) Hoppe, and his four grandchildren, Elizabeth and Jaxon McIntyre, Zoe and Ian Hoppe. Dr. Mac is also survived by his former spouse, Carol McIntyre. He was preceded in death by his parents Wallace and Margaret McIntyre.

Dr. Mac had many hobbies, most of all running. He ran for 61 years including marathons (New York and Marine Corp marathons notably), half-marathons, 10ks, 5ks, and just for the fun of it- frequently running more than 35 miles a week even when not training for a race. He was an excellent photographer who would never sell his work despite numerous frame shop requests. He camped, fished, gardened, hiked, and simply loved the outdoors. He loved his dogs. He thrived on travel, always seeking his next new adventure. He especially loved hiking in Northwest Scotland, the site of the McIntyre lands.

He will be remembered as a charismatic, principled, and outgoing man who stopped at every office on the way back to his for a chat. He was an ethical physician who sincerely cared for his patients. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

A service will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Allnutt Funeral Service Drake Chapel; 650 W Drake Rd, Fort Collins, CO 80526 with a reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate a donation to the Wyoming Outdoor Council, Doctors Without Borders, or the William Wallace McIntyre Scholarship fund at the University of Miami, Ohio.
