
Bonnie Smith Wescott, 83, former wife of the late John “Joe” Wescott, passed away Monday, December 16, 2024 at her home in Accomac, VA. She was the daughter of the late Brooks and Sally Smith.
A lifelong educator, Ms. Wescott graduated from Onancock High School, received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Mary Washington, and a master’s degree from the University of Virginia. She began her career in Louisa, VA teaching chemistry, physics, and general science at the high school level. She later transferred to Charlottesville City Public Schools, where her career evolved from the classroom setting to supervisor, assistant principal, and principal over the next 24 years. During this time, she received the Teacher of the Year Award, Regional Administrator of the Year Award, and was a Danforth Fellow. She spent the next nine years as Director of Elementary Education for Spotsylvania County Public Schools and was part of an Administrative Exchange with schools in London, England. Ms. Wescott retired in 1999 and returned home to the Eastern Shore of Virginia.
Ms. Wescott was a former member of the Onancock Rotary Club, an active member of Ye Accawmacke Garden Club, and a member of the former Drummondtown United Methodist Church. She enjoyed traveling and playing bridge.
Survivors include her daughter, Caroline Loutzenhiser and her husband, John, of Denver, CO; brother, Charles “Mac” Smith and his wife, Eileen, of Berlin, MD; grandchildren, Stacey Loutzenhiser and Matthew Loutzenhiser; and great-grandchildren, Joss and Ellie Loutzenhiser.
Services will be conducted from the graveside at the Belle Haven Cemetery on Saturday, December 21, 2024 at 11:00 a.m., with The Reverend Bill McClung officiating.
