A temporary closure on the harvest of speckled trout will take effect April 1 and remain in place through June 30, following action taken at the March 31 meeting of the Virginia Marine Resources Commission.
Officials say the closure comes in response to multiple years of cold-stun related fish kills, which have significantly impacted the population. The measure is intended to protect the remaining spawning stock during the peak of the 2026 spawning season.
The decision aims to give the species an opportunity to recover by reducing fishing pressure during a critical reproductive period.
Speckled trout, also known as salmon trout, are a popular target for recreational anglers across the Eastern Shore and coastal Virginia waters.
Officials are encouraging anglers to comply with the temporary closure as part of broader efforts to sustain the fishery for future seasons.
