Gavin Sheets’ scorching bat helped the San Diego Padres break out of a losing streak, securing a series win over the Atlanta Braves this past weekend. Over his last five games, Sheets has launched four home runs.
The power surge kicked off Thursday night against the Toronto Blue Jays, when Sheets hit two two-run homers, driving in four RBIs for the Padres. Despite his efforts, San Diego fell to Toronto 7-6, marking Sheets’ second career game with two home runs.
Sheets stayed hot on Friday against the Braves, adding another homer to propel the Padres to a win. However, Atlanta evened the series on Saturday with a 4-0 victory, and Sheets was held hitless in that game. But the slugger bounced back Sunday, blasting a two-run homer in the top of the 6th inning to help the Padres seal a 5-3 win and clinch the series.
This season, Sheets has made 159 plate appearances, tallying 21 runs, 45 hits, and 31 RBIs with a .283 batting average. He’s also slugged 10 home runs.
“I try to put the ball in play, focus on contact, and go to all fields,” Sheets said. “Right now, I’m hitting for power, which is great, but I think that’s just a result of putting the right swing on the right pitches.”
Sheets is the grandson of the late Gene and Jo Ann Lusby from Pocomoke City. He is the son of former Orioles star Larry Sheets and Sharon Lusby, and the nephew of Mark and Brooke Lusby.
