Gavin Sheets was sent from the Chicago White Sox to the San Diego Padres in November with a minor league contract and entered spring training with a long shot chance to make the opening day roster. But a strong spring training which included 6 home runs resulted in Sheets making the opening day roster.
The Padres opened at home with the Atlanta Braves Tuesday but Sheets a left hander who mainly bats against right hand pitchers was not included on the starting line up. But in the bottom of the seventh inning manager Mike Shiltz inserted Gavin as a pinch hitter with the Braves leading 4-3. Sheets continued his pre season hot streak with a solo home run over the center field fence tying the score at 4. The Padres went on to win 7-4.
Gavin is the grandson of Jo Ann Lusby and the late Gene Lusby of Pocomoke City. He is the nephew of Mark and Brooke Lusby and the son of the former Sharon Lusby and Orioles slugger Larry Sheets.
