Landon Joynes won the Junior Club golf championship at the Eastern Shore Yacht & Country Club, besting five entrants with a score of 95. David Hughes and Grayson Ford were tied for second with a 97.
Joynes, 16, the son of Matt Parker and Shannon Joynes, has been golfing since he was 8 in the summer camps at ESY&CC. He is going into his third year on the Nandua High School golf team.
Ford, 16, is the son of Chuck and Shannon Ford. Hughes, also 16, is the son of Paul and Wanda Hughes.
All three golfers are regular attendees at twice weekly golf sessions of the Shore Golf Club directed by Paul Hughes with the help of ESY&CC teaching pro Jay Williams.
The Tuesday and Thursday sessions at ESY&CC start at 4 p.m. and last until 7 p.m. and are open to all middle school and high school aged youth from the Eastern Shore of Virginia
Paul Hughes said the club has approximately 30 sets of donated clubs that are provided to anyone not having their own clubs. “We provide instruction, but our primary goal is to give youth an opportunity to be exposed to golf. We talk about golf etiquette, respect for others and things that could be life lessons as well,” said Hughes.
Hughes said the golf club started out two years ago when his son wanted to play golf with youth his age. “We began with as few as five and now have as many as 20. Attendance at sessions is not mandatory because kids have other things going on. They just come when they can make it. Jay Williams has been a big help showing the kids the technical aspects of the game. The primary purpose, however, is for the youth to have fun and learn the game with their peers.”
