The Chincoteague Ponies stormed back from a 20-point deficit in the final quarter to defeat Kenston Forest, 24-20.
For three quarters, the Ponies struggled to generate any offense, while Kenston Forest controlled the game and built a 20-0 lead heading into the fourth. But the final 12 minutes belonged entirely to Chincoteague, who erupted for 24 unanswered points to claim the improbable victory.
The turnaround began with George Kasetos intercepting a pass early in the fourth quarter. On the ensuing drive, quarterback JDarius Davis connected with Camuary Davis on a short pass that turned into a 30-yard gain, setting up a Davis rushing touchdown. JDarius Davis added the two-point conversion to make it 20-8.
Moments later, Jakai Simon recovered an onside kick, and the Ponies struck again. JDarius Davis found Camuary Davis for a 37-yard touchdown, then hit Garrett Daisey for another two-point conversion, cutting the deficit to 20-16. After a defensive stand forced a punt, the offense delivered once more. Facing a crucial fourth-and-one, Garrett Daisey muscled ahead for the first down, and on the next play JDarius Davis connected with Camuary Davis for a 64-yard score. Another two-point conversion by Davis gave Chincoteague its first lead, 24-20.
Kenston Forest had one final chance, but Chincoteague’s defense forced a turnover on downs, sealing the comeback. The Ponies then ran out the clock, capping one of the most dramatic finishes in recent memory.
“This was truly unbelievable,” said assistant Coach Ted Daisey. “The whole game turned around in the fourth quarter. The kids never gave up.”
JDarius Davis completed 9 of 12 attempts for 205 yards and 2 touchdowns, with no interceptions.
On the ground, Chincoteague finished with 75 yards on 37 carries. Camuary Davis carried the load with 23 rushes for 52 yards and a touchdown, while Garrett Daisey added 32 yards on 7 attempts.
The receiving corps came up big, led by Camuary Davis’s explosive 3-catch, 131-yard, 2-touchdown performance. Austin Adams added 61 yards on 3 catches, while Garrett Daisey chipped in 13 yards on 3 grabs.
The Ponies are now 3-2 on the season, and will play next Friday night at home against Greenbrier Christian for Homecoming.
The Arcadia Firebirds fell to Sussex Tech Saturday morning 42-13. The Firebirds are now 1-4 on the season and will host Lancaster this Friday night, which will be carried live on 103.3 FM WESR.
