Chance to be inducted into Eastern Shore Baseball Hall of Fame

A lifetime of dedication to baseball will be honored this weekend as Larry A. Chance of Saxis is inducted into the Eastern Shore Baseball Hall of Fame during ceremonies at Delmarva Shorebirds Stadium.

Born in Nassawadox, Chance began his baseball journey on the Eastern Shore as a standout in Little League and Babe Ruth leagues, helping lead multiple teams to championship seasons. In high school, he played for the Atlantic Cardinals as both a starting pitcher and shortstop. His teams claimed back-to-back district titles in 1975 and 1976, competing against strong programs from Virginia Beach and Norfolk.

During his senior year, Chance posted a 5-2 record on the mound with a 1.92 ERA and hit .384, including three home runs—an all-around performance that reflected his versatile athletic talent.

After a decade-long hiatus from the sport, Chance returned to the field in 1987, joining the Virginia Shores of the Eastern Shore Baseball League. Playing under Hall of Fame manager Dave Tyler, he contributed as a pitcher and shortstop until 1990.

Now 65, Chance remains active in the game, competing in an over-50 league in Salisbury. Yet it may be his contributions off the field that have had the most lasting impact. Chance has coached and trained players across Little League, high school, and American Legion baseball, as well as youth softball. Many of his former players have gone on to compete at the collegiate level.

His induction this weekend recognizes not only his playing accomplishments, but his enduring legacy in shaping generations of Eastern Shore athletes.
