Wallops Flight Facility Draft Shoreline Protection Program Environmental Assessment is Available for Review
The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) of 1969 established a national policy to protect the environment by directing federal agencies to consider the effects of their actions on the human environment prior to implementing the action. NEPA also requires that federal agencies give the public an opportunity to participate in the process. NASA is pleased to announce the availability of the Draft Shoreline Protection Program Environmental Assessment (EA) for renourishment and protection of infrastructure at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center’s Wallops Flight Facility (WFF), Accomack County, Virginia.
The Draft EA evaluates the environmental effects of a range of reasonable alternatives that would restore the Wallops Island shoreline infrastructure protection area to reduce the potential for damage to or loss of assets on Wallops Island. The Proposed Action would involve the following over the next 7 years: repair and extension of the existing seawall, renourishing the beach using sand from an offshore shoal, and constructing up to 12 breakwaters.
The Draft EA will be available for review at the following locations and at https://www.nasa.gov/goddard/memd/nepa/shoreline/, Chincoteague Island Library, Chincoteague, Virginia, Eastern Shore Public Library, Parksley, Virginia, WFF Visitor Center, Wallops Island, Virginia (open Friday – Saturday).
NASA will consider all comments in preparing the Final EA. Comments on the Draft EA are requested by February 17, 2026. Comments should be addressed to:
