Captain Todd Wessells has announced his candidacy for the office of Sheriff of Accomack County in the November General Election. Wessells has over 25 years experience in law enforcement with the County. Wessells is an Accomack County native and graduated from Arcadia High School in 1988. After high school he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. Wessells earned several awards including the Navy Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Marine of the quarter for September 1990 among others. Serving in Operation Desert Storm, he received an honorable discharge with the rank of Sergeant.
After joining the Accomack County Sheriff’s Department in 1993 as a corrections officer, Wessells rose through the ranks to Patrol Sargeant, Investigator, Lieutenant of Patrol and Operations, and in 2011 was promoted to Captain. He has completed several courses in law enforcement and attended many seminars on various aspects of the profession.
Wessells has served with several youth organizations including the Central Accomack Little League, Nandua Soccer Club, Beach FC Soccer and the Nandua High School Booster Club and the Chincoteague Youth Football League. Wessells is also a member of the Central Lodge 300 AF and AM.
Wessells lives in Painter with his wife Shannon, owner of Shore Administrative Services. LLC. He has two sons, Dustin, a third year Medical Student at UVA and Trevor, who is an officer with the Virginia Marine Resource Commission.
