Weekend rain eases dry conditions, but drought remains on the Eastern Shore

Weekend rainfall brought some welcome relief to the Eastern Shore, but it was not enough to end the region’s ongoing drought.

Most areas received between 1.5 and 2 inches of rain during the 72-hour period from Friday through Sunday. The exception was the Eastville area, where an early Sunday downpour dropped about 4 inches of rain.

According to the Rain Total app, most of the Eastern Shore remains about 5 inches below normal rainfall for the year. Sunday’s soaking rain helped reduce that deficit around Eastville to about 1 inch below normal.

While the recent rainfall improved soil moisture and provided a break from the dry conditions, forecasters say the region will need significantly more rain in the weeks ahead before the drought is over.
