Last week the Virginia Marine Resouces Commission voted not to extend the blue crab season as requested.
Following a public hearing the VMRC voted 6 to 1 to keep the blue crab season for the 2025 season to begin March 17 and end December 16. Also included in the vote was a motion that would also keep the winter dredging season closed for the 2025 year to protect over wintering female crabs.
According to a news release, the VMRC said that after consideration of data, public input and recommendations from the VMRC staff and the Crab Management Advisory Committee, the commission decided to prioritize ongoing conservation measures for the blue crab population.
