Virginia’s Sales Tax Holiday Returns This Weekend

Virginia shoppers will have a chance to save money on back-to-school supplies and emergency preparedness items during the Commonwealth’s annual three-day Sales Tax Holiday.

The tax-free weekend begins at 12:01 a.m. Friday, August 7, and continues through 11:59 p.m. Sunday, August 9. During that time, qualifying purchases can be made without paying Virginia’s state and local sales tax.

Eligible items include school supplies priced at $20 or less per item, clothing and footwear costing $100 or less per item, and certain hurricane and emergency preparedness products. Energy Star and WaterSense appliances priced up to $2,500 also qualify, along with portable generators costing $1,000 or less and gas-powered chainsaws priced at $350 or less.

The tax exemption applies to purchases made in stores, online, and by mail or phone, as long as the order is placed during the tax-free weekend. Virginia Tax encourages shoppers to review the complete list of qualifying items before making purchases.
