May is Motorcycle Awareness Month; “Ride 2 Save Lives” Courses Offered Across the State

As motorcycle fatalities in Virginia continue at nearly the same rate as last year, Virginia State Police are reminding all motorists to stay alert and ride responsibly. With warmer weather expected to increase motorcycle traffic, the agency is emphasizing the importance of safety during Motorcycle Awareness Month.

According to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, 26 motorcycle-related deaths have occurred statewide as of April 30, 2025 — including 18 in March and April alone. That figure closely mirrors the 30 fatalities reported during the same period in 2024.

“A motorcycle ride can absolutely be a fantastic experience,” said Captain Richard Denney, State Motorcycle Coordinator for the Virginia State Police. “But it requires you to know your capabilities on the bike, and for other drivers to make sure they are aware of when motorcycles are around.”

In an effort to reduce crashes and improve rider awareness, Virginia State Police are continuing their “Ride 2 Save Lives” program. The self-assessment courses, held throughout the Commonwealth, provide licensed riders with the chance to sharpen their skills in a safe, controlled setting. Topics include hazard handling, navigating curves, dealing with special traffic situations, and interstate highway safety.

Courses are led by Virginia State Police Motors Troopers. Participants must register in advance at virginiastatepolice.eventbrite.com, and space is limited. Riders must have a valid Class M license, DOT-approved helmet, eye protection, and street-legal motorcycle to take part.

Additional motorcycle safety tips from Senior Trooper Fernando Nunes are available in an accompanying video distributed with the release.
