Virginia State Police investigate fatal crash in Northampton County

The Virginia State Police are investigating a single-vehicle fatal crash that occurred Sunday afternoon in Northampton County.

According to Sgt. Michelle Anaya, the incident took place at approximately 1:52 p.m. on Bayside Road in the Franktown area. According to preliminary reports, the driver of a 1984 Ford pickup truck, 74-year-old James A. Kellam, pulled out of his driveway and turned off the roadway into a ditch.

State Police confirmed that neither speed nor alcohol were contributing factors in the crash. Notification has been made to Kellam’s next of kin.

Investigators believe a medical emergency may have caused the incident. The crash remains under investigation pending findings from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
