As winter weather moves through Virginia, the Virginia State Police (VSP) continues to respond to numerous crashes across the state. While Matthew Demlein, Public Relations Coordinator for the Virginia State Police, did not confirm that all incidents are directly weather-related, the increase in activity reflects the challenging conditions on the roads. VSP has stepped up its efforts by increasing the number of troopers on duty and transitioning to 12-hour shifts to better manage the situation.

To ensure public safety, the Virginia State Police strongly advise residents to avoid driving during the storm. Hazardous road conditions, including slick and icy surfaces, have made travel dangerous. For those who must venture out, VSP reminds drivers to exercise caution and adapt their driving to the conditions. This includes using headlights for better visibility, reducing speed, and maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles to prevent collisions.

Additionally, motorists are urged to take necessary precautions to prepare their vehicles for winter travel. VSP recommends ensuring that windshield wipers, tires, and batteries are in good working order, filling the gas tank before heading out, and checking fluid levels. Drivers are also advised to carry essential supplies, including a window scraper, blanket, bottled water, snacks, a flashlight, and a phone charger, to be prepared for emergencies.

Most crashes during winter weather are caused by vehicles sliding off the road, into guardrails, or colliding with other vehicles. Wearing a seat belt can help reduce the risk of serious injury in such incidents. By following these safety tips and exercising caution, drivers can help protect themselves and others on Virginia’s roadways during the storm.
