An altercation between inmates at the Accomack Jail last July left one man with four lost teeth and two lacerations, according to records and an indictment filed in Accomack Circuit Court this week.

Thirty-year-old Shaquille Jordan Gaskins, of Seaside Road in Melfa, was indicted on a count of maliciously wounding Edward Rausch with intent to maim, disfigure, disable, or kill on July 8.

Evidence includes a surveillance video of the jail’s H Block at about 5:15 a.m. that day. According to court records, an investigator’s review of the video stated Rausch was lying on a mat on the floor between two cells when a man who appeared to be Gaskins leaned down and struck Rausch in the head with his right hand about 10 times. “Rausch postured himself in a defensive manner, but did not appear to strike back,” the record stated.

The incident ended with Gaskins standing up and Joshua Bailey (another inmate) lightly pushing Gaskins away,” the file continued. The incident allegedly occurred because Rausch was disrespectful to Gaskins. “Thought I was …playing,” Gaskins was allegedly heard saying. “If you were on the street… you would have been shot.”

In another case, 60-year-old Kathy Peterson, of Southside Road in Onancock, was indicted on nine counts of violating a protective order between May and August.

“I felt threatened just like all the other times in the past,” the protected person wrote in the court record. It was alleged that Peterson threatened to punch or take lives.

In a third case, 23-year-old Jacob Lee Leary, of Main Street on Chincoteague, was indicted on counts of reckless disregard for the life of two children under the age of 18 when he wrecked his car on July 29.

According to court records Leary hit either a ditch or a tree just after passing a security gate at Trails End. One of the children was in his lap and the other was in his fiancée’s lap. All four of them were in the front seat. The three passengers were taken to the hospital The child in Leary’s lap hit the windshield. Records show Leary registered .14 grams per 210 liters of breath on a breathalyzer test. The legal limit is .08.

Brittany Nicole Chase, of Pintail Drive in Horntown, was indicted on a count of neglect of a child under the age of 18 with a reckless disregard for human life on July 29

Twenty-one-year-old Tyreik Finney, of Boggs Road in Painter, was indicted on counts of eluding police and possessing a sawed-off shotgun or rifle on Dec. 15, 2023.

Forty-four-year-old Bobby Lee Padgett, of Baylys Neck Road in Accomac, was indicted on a count of assaulting Deputy N. Lewis on July 17.

Fifty-six-year-old Tammi Lynne Tapman, of Redwood Road in Onancock, was indicted on a count of making a false statement on a criminal history consent form for the purchase of a firearm on May 4.

Twenty-one-year-old Abigail Orozco Pereira, of Ross Lane in Bloxom, was indicted on a count of being the driver in a hit-and-run crash that involved damages of more than $1,000 on June 22.

Forty-one-year-old Winston Miller III, of Whites Neck Road in Parksley, was indicted on eight counts of credit card theft on July 29. According to court records, Miller apologized to a magistrate for the crimes.

     Larry William Austin, no date of birth or address available, was indicted on two counts of forging a check for $740, uttering the checks, and two misdemeanor counts of obtaining less than $1,000 by false pretenses from El Crucero Tienda Haspasa. The crimes allegedly occurred on June 3, 2022.
