Crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) continue winter weather operations this morning across Accomack and Northampton counties with icy conditions from an overnight refreeze following this weekend’s wintry precipitation. Motorists are urged to avoid or limit travel when possible, as temperatures and roadway conditions continue to vary across the Eastern Shore.

Many primary state routes in both counties are generally in clear to minor condition, meaning travel lanes are mostly clear but may still have isolated areas of snow, ice, or slush. With primary routes addressed, VDOT crews are focusing additional efforts on secondary roads, where icy conditions remain more widespread.

Despite ongoing treatment efforts, subfreezing temperatures overnight and into the coming days may cause any remaining moisture on roadways to refreeze. Wet pavement should be treated as ice, and motorists are advised to use extreme caution if travel is unavoidable.

Freezing rain and ice accumulation developed overnight, particularly in Northampton County and inland portions of the Eastern Shore. Freezing precipitation on top of existing snow and sleet, combined with sustained freezing temperatures, has created hazardous travel conditions that may persist through the morning hours.

VDOT crews continue to monitor conditions and treat roadways with salt and abrasives, giving priority attention to locations that freeze first, including bridges, overpasses, and curves. Additional resources have been deployed to areas experiencing the most significant impacts, particularly in Northampton County, where prolonged subfreezing temperatures are expected.

Gusty winds combined with lingering ice may increase the likelihood of downed trees and power lines today, even as precipitation tapers off. Crews remain on standby to address debris or fallen trees that impact roadways.

VDOT will continue round-the-clock operations, though hazardous travel conditions may persist through the morning and potentially beyond, depending on temperature trends.

Motorists are encouraged to check road conditions before traveling, reduce speed, increase following distance, and remain alert for icy patches, especially on secondary roads.
