VDOT is set to begin replacing the bridge on Shields Bridge Road (Route 178) over Occohannock Creek this month. Starting as early as Thursday, Jan. 23, contractor crews will implement a full roadway closure for construction at the bridge, located between Hillsborough Drive and Northfield Drive. A long-term detour will direct motorists to use Main Street/Big Pine Road (Route 609) and Boston Road (Route 178) to access each end of Shields Bridge Road.
The existing bridge, built in 1933, is structurally deficient and will be replaced with a new structure designed to improve safety and functionality. Features will also include more than 9 inches of added vertical clearance, sheet pile walls, guardrails, and roadway tie-in work.
The $7.76 million construction contract to replace the bridge was awarded to Caton Construction Group in December 2024. Completion is estimated by late spring 2026.
