Be patient and attentive on the roads to keep students safe as they return to school

As more than one million students across Virginia return to school this month, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is urging drivers to exercise caution around school buses and in school zones to ensure the safety of all road users.

Students will be commuting by foot, bicycle, school bus, and private vehicles, increasing activity on local roads during morning and afternoon hours. While school buses are considered the safest form of student transportation, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that students are most vulnerable when walking to and from the bus or during loading and unloading.

Virginia law prohibits motorists from passing a stopped school bus displaying flashing red lights and an extended stop sign. This law applies to drivers approaching the bus from both directions unless a physical median or barrier separates the lanes. Motorists should remain alert for students crossing streets even when not legally required to stop.

Some localities have installed speed-monitoring cameras in school zones to enforce safety during designated times. These systems are managed by local governments, not VDOT, and violators may face fines.

VDOT offers the following safety reminders for drivers:

  • Be patient and prepared to stop frequently around school buses.
  • Yellow flashing lights mean the bus is preparing to stop; red flashing lights mean students are boarding or exiting.
  • Watch for students walking to and from bus stops, especially those arriving late who may enter the street unexpectedly.
  • Stay alert for children near school buildings in the morning and afternoon.
  • Avoid distractions; do not use electronic devices while driving.

VDOT also encourages parents and guardians to discuss these safety tips with children:

  • Arrive at the bus stop at least five minutes early.
  • Stand at least five giant steps back from the curb while waiting.
  • Use sidewalks where available; if not, walk on the left side of the road facing traffic.
  • Cross at marked crosswalks or intersections after checking traffic.
  • Follow directions from crossing guards and pedestrian signals.
  • Check for traffic before stepping off a school bus.
  • Stay alert and limit the use of electronic devices when walking near roads.
